This is almost a bit of a mini book haul, as I managed to not go too, too crazy this month! Well, with books, anyway. In life, we crossed the crazy bridge and burned it to ashes a long, long time ago.

Read on to find out which newbies I added to the collection in the month of September!

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is a total 80’s throwback look at a classic tale of possession and exorcism by the author of the Ikea send up Horrorstor. When Abby’s best friend Gretchen runs off for a spontaneous skinny dip during a slumber party and seemingly disappears, Abby and their other friends spend hours looking for her, only to have her wander out of the woods in the wee hours of the morning with something very, very wrong. Her behavior following the incident progresses from strange to baffling to downright terrifying as Abby slowly realizes her best friend is possessed and she is going to have to be the one to deal with it.

I love spooky stories, and already read this one! If you want to know my thoughts on it, take a look at my full review here.

Cress by Marissa Meyer

Cress, by Marissa Meyer, is the third installment in The Lunar Chronicles series of fairytale retellings and re-imaginings, in which Meyer takes on the retelling of Rapunzel. I haven’t read this one yet, but I am so excited to do so! I’m definitely ready to continue The Lunar Chronicles journey, and I’ve been curious about Cress since we very, very briefly met her in Cinder. This one will definitely be one of my next reads!

Emma in the Night by Wendy Walker

Emma in the Night was the book I chose for my September Book of the Month, and it looks like another interesting thriller. The judge for this book was Krysten Ritter, actress and author of Bonfire, who described it as a “psychological thriller that feels authentic, current, and keeps you up way too late at night”—which totally sold me on it.

Emma in the Night is the tale of the Tanner sisters, who were kidnapped when they were fifteen and seventeen years old. Three years later, Cass returns without her sister, Emma. When Dr. Abby Winter begins examining their case, she finds that the story Cass tells and the behavior of the family don’t exactly add up, and she begins to peel back the layers of the mystery and try to discover exactly what the girls went through.

This one sounds like it could be a nail-biter, so I’ll definitely let y’all know!

Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows

Before She Ignites was the book I received in the September OwlCrate. The theme of the September crate was Mythical Creatures, and this high fantasy YA novel seems to fit perfectly with that concept. Before She Ignites tells the tale of Mira, a young woman who symbolizes peace to people of The Fallen Isles. But despite the fact that the peace treaties are named for her and that her community seems to hold her to a very high standard, Mira is far from perfect. She struggles with anxiety and compulsive counting, which is awesome to see in the main character of a fantasy novel. When Mira uncovers a dangerous secret, even those closest to her turn on her and she is sentenced to prison in The Pit. She must find a way not just to survive, but also to fight back.

I’ve read a few high fantasy novels, but I don’t read them very frequently, so this one sounds like it will be an exciting change of pace for me! OwlCrate is so good at bringing new books into my life that I might not have necessarily considered on my own, but which really help to expand my horizons and even lead me to new favorites (like in the August crate when they helped me discover The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd-Jones)!

Well, that’s it for September! What books did you acquire in the month of September? What did you read over the course of the month? Let me know in the comments. You know I’d love to talk. <3
